Skin Biopsies

In-Office Skin Biopsy Services Across Tampa Bay

Living in Florida means more sun exposure than almost anywhere else in the country. While that's great for outdoor activities, it also means a higher risk of developing skin lesions on the feet and lower legs — areas that are often overlooked during routine skin checks.

At Total Foot and Ankle of Tampa Bay we offer in-office skin biopsies at all five of our locations — Brandon, Riverview, Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, and Sun City Center. Our physicians are trained to recognize abnormal skin changes and provide fast, comfortable biopsy procedures right in the office under local anesthesia.

Why Foot Skin Health Matters

Many patients don't realize that the feet and lower legs are common sites for both benign and cancerous skin lesions. The tops of the feet, ankles, and lower legs are frequently exposed to the sun and are often missed during self-examinations.

Skin conditions we evaluate and biopsy include:

  • Melanoma — the most serious form of skin cancer
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Plantar warts
  • Benign skin growths and cysts
  • Unusual moles or pigmented lesions
  • Chronic wounds that don't heal
  • Suspicious discolorations or texture changes

Early detection is the most important factor in successful treatment. If you notice something unusual on your foot or lower leg, don't ignore it.

What to Watch For

See your podiatrist promptly if you notice any of the following on your feet or lower legs:

  • A mole or spot that has changed in size, shape, or color
  • A sore that doesn't heal within 2-3 weeks
  • A growth that bleeds easily or itches persistently
  • A dark streak under a toenail
  • Any new or unusual bump, patch, or discoloration
  • A wound that appears infected or spreading

When in doubt, get it checked. A quick in-office visit could make all the difference.

What to Expect During a Skin Biopsy

Our skin biopsy procedure is straightforward, minimally invasive, and performed entirely in the office:

  1. Consultation — Your doctor examines the area of concern and determines if a biopsy is needed
  2. Local Anesthesia — The area is numbed so you feel minimal to no discomfort during the procedure
  3. Tissue Sample — A small sample of skin is removed and sent to a pathology lab for analysis
  4. Results — Your doctor reviews the pathology report and discusses findings with you
  5. Follow-Up Care — If treatment is needed your doctor will coordinate next steps

The procedure typically takes less than 15 minutes and most patients return to normal activity the same day.

Who Should Consider a Skin Biopsy?

We recommend consulting with our physicians if you:

  • Spend significant time outdoors in the Florida sun
  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer
  • Have noticed any unusual changes to skin on your feet or lower legs
  • Are a diabetic patient with a wound that won't heal
  • Have a growth or lesion that concerns you for any reason
